Craft Beer 101
The popularity of craft beer continues to explode. If you still haven’t taken the plunge, what are you waiting for? You don’t have to abandon your choice beer, but you might as well find out what you’ve been missing. Here’s a quick guide to the benefits of craft beer.
Since craft beers are brewed in small batches, they can afford to be more boldly creative with the taste. The results often polarize drinkers, but when you find a craft beer you like, the experience is hard to beat. Having a hard time finding the brew that’s just right for your palate? With the variety of wildly different craft beers currently in circulation, you aren’t likely to run out of options any time soon.
Okay, not every craft beer is a powerhouse, but unlike many mainstream beers, they rarely dip below 4% ABV. What does this mean? First, there’s no shortage of flavor. Second, you will spend less money loosening up on a Friday night. Third (and arguably best), you’ll take fewer bathroom breaks.
It offers surprising health benefits
For years, you’ve been hearing that wine is good for your heart. It turns out craft beer has similarly positive effects. These brews typically have about 30 times more hops than mass produced beers. This means they contain far more polyphenols, an antioxidant that lowers cholesterol and fights cancer. Not every beer can brag about that.
Another area where craft beer has parallels with wine is in its influence on social behavior. It used to be that beer was seen as the bland alternative to the more nuanced world of wine. But thanks to the craft beer boom, drinkers now have much more to talk about, including the subtle characteristics of their must-try beer and the latest novelty brew they’ve read about or even sampled. Like wine, craft beer also pairs well with many foods, making for lively (and delicious) dinner parties.
While some craft breweries expand beyond their home province, most function on a local level. This makes it possible to meet the people who brew your choice beer, ask them questions and even influence their future concoctions. If you get really inspired, you might even wind up creating a beer of your own.
